The "Figurines" wall art print was designed by Barcelona-based illustrator Nina Izycka for Slowdown Studio. Originally from Warsaw, Nina's work is deeply shaped by Polish poster art and illustration from the mid-to-late 20th century - bold, graphic, and always with a strong point of view. The inspiration here came from pre-Columbian sculptures: those small, handmade animal and human figures that carry so much life in such a simple form. Nina has taken that ancient folk-art energy and made it entirely her own with four creatures rendered in hot pink against deep forest green, their surfaces filled with stripes, dots, and hand-drawn marks. About the Artist

Nina Izycka is an illustrator and visual artist from Warsaw (Poland), currently living in Barcelona (Spain). She studied in the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw and at La Escola Massana in Barcelona. She has worked with, amongst others, New York Times Book Review and Bloomberg Weekend.

In her projects and in life, she loves telling stories. She constructs organic images, transforming reality in her own way. Her work is poetic and symbolic. She creates with the aim of awakening sensitivity and empathy. She also uses art and illustration to
express non-conformism and social criticism. In her projects, she seeks to convey ideals of respect and support between people, animals and nature.

In her work, she experiments extensively, blending traditional and digital techniques. She uses different textures, at colours and collage elements. She often works with gouache, cut-outs, watercolours, coloured pencils and screen and riso print. She is passionate about all things material and physical. The creative process brings her great joy and energy. For her, creating is a game and a constant discovery.

What inspired your artwork for this print?

Pre-Colombian sculptures of little characters and animals.

How does where you live influence your work?

Barcelona is very live city in illustration. It is very inspiring to keep working while surrounded by so many talented illustrators, zine and book fairs, exhibitions, books presentations etc. It is also a place where so many different people and cultures live together and it is also very inspiring for me and my work to see this mixture of so different visual universes.

There are also a lot of old architecture and sculptures that I like to watch and take photos, to have my library of images so they can be my references when I don’t know what to draw. I also really like to go to the mountains that from the city is really easy to get and be inspired by the plants and animals that live around us.

What's your favorite way to slow down?

Go to the beach, walk in the mountains, eat lunch with people I love, being in the nature.
