"Spaghetti Sunday" was designed by France-based Italian illustrator Lucia Calfapietra for Slowdown Studio. Lucia's work is rooted in the textures and colours of old printed ephemera, cheap packaging, things that feel handmade even when they're not, with food as a recurring subject where connections get made and stories start. This piece traces back to a lockdown-era still-life photography challenge, its hot pink and electric blue drawn from her Mediterranean surroundings. Read our interview with Lucia here.

About the Artist

Lucia Calfapietra is an Italian illustrator based in France. After many years in Paris, she now lives in Marseille with her partner and their one-year-old baby. Deeply influenced by old children's books, she plays with textures, clean shapes, and vivid colors. She loves to digitally recreate the feeling of hand-made, cheap printed ephemera from the past, combining dreamy scenery with an ironic touch. Her illustrations are published in magazines, book covers, children's books, and packaging. Her work often revolves around food. Through the act of cooking and collective meals, connections are created and stories are born. She often collaborates with her partner, graphic designer and lettering artist Nicolò Giacomin.

About the Artist

Lucia Calfapietra is an Italian illustrator based in France. Deeply influenced by old children’s books, she plays with textures, clean shapes and vivid colors. She loves to digitally recreate the feeling of hand-made, cheap printed ephemera from the past.

Her work often revolves around food and she believes that through the act of cooking and collective meals, connections are created and stories are born.

What inspired your artwork for this print?

My illustration is inspired by week 59 photo of stillherestilllife’s challenge. During lockdown their still-life photo inspirations helped me (and a lot of other creatives) to not get lost in thoughts, actually make stuff and also get it into the world! I produced several prints inspired by their prompts and I am really attached to them!

How does where you live influence your work?

I can really see how moving by the Mediterranean sea has brought light and colour to my work and my mind. I love all the mixed influences that make this city unique. Also, in the last few years a lot of artists have arrived in the area, things are moving fast and there is a lot of inspiration around!

What's your favorite way to slow down?

I like to cook, even if I can’t really follow a recipe. In fact I like the concentration that some improvising in the kitchen demands, it helps me to disconnect from the rest. Of course, my creations aren’t always successful (especially with my little one) but generally edible ;)
